It’s been reported that Facebook is building a smartphone. We heard rumors about this in 2010 from TechCrunch but Facebook said they had no plans to build hardware. According to a new report from the New York Times, Facebook is trying to build a smartphone again and this time they’ve hired ex-Apple staff who worked on the iPhone and the iPad.

The New York Times also says Facebook realised it couldn’t build hardware with its crop of talent and decided to hire people who had worked on smartphones and electronics hence, hiring ex-Apple staff.

One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used, he said. Another former Apple hardware engineer was recruited by a Facebook executive and was told about the company’s hardware explorations.

Facebook has recently been in the news after its IPO launch and its new app ‘Camera’. The social networking company has also built an App Store catering to its 900 Million users.

If there’s something we know, it’s that Facebook has to figure out a way to monetize its increasing number of mobile users on its platform who spend more time on its mobile version than they do on Facebook’s desktop version.

Is a Facebook phone the answer? Please leave a comment.
