Apple’s New iPad Is Official: Starts At $499

Apple has just concluded its event for the new iPad. That’s what it’s been called all evening. “New iPad” although it was called “3rd generation iPad” in one of the videos shown. The new iPad remains at 9.7 inches like the iPad 2 and is 9.4mm thin and weighs 1.4lbs making it slightly heavier than the iPad 2. It still features a retina display but Apple has taken it a step further making the display 2047 x 1536 pixels. This means there are 3.1 million pixels on the device and 264 pixels per inch of the new iPad. Apple says that’s the most number of pixels on any mobile device.

On the inside, it’s powered by an A5X processor, two times faster than the A5 processor on the iPhone 4S and four times faster than the Tegra 3 processor. It runs a new iOS 5.1. It also sports an iSight camera – a 5 megapixel rear camera with an  illuminated sensor on the back, 5-element lens and an IR Filter. The camera can record video up to 1080p HD.

Errrr, we’re sad to announce that there’ll be no Siri on this device. Apple has added a microphone key to the iPad’s virtual keyboard. This allows you dictate to your iPad in US English, British, Australian, French, German and Japanese. That’s the most Siri you’ll get.

For connectivity, there’s Wi-Fi as always and the new iPad has support for 4G LTE networks. It can also connect to  HSPA+ at speeds of up to  21Mbp, DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps and max on LTE at 73Mbps. Apple has signed with Verizon, Rogers, Bell, Telus and AT&T to provide LTE services for the new iPad. It’ll still be able to run on any 3G network around the world. Your iPad can now act as a WiFi hotspot. If your network allows you.

Battery life still stands at 10 hours for the new iPad and 9 hours on 4G.

The new iPad costs $499 for the 16GB WiFi model while it’ll cost $599 for the 32GB and 64GB will go for $699. For the 4G + WiFi new iPad, it costs $629, $729 and $829. It’s currently available for pre-order and will be available at the stores on the 16th of march in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. iPad 2 prices are down by $100 to $399 for Wi-Fi and $529 for Wi-Fi + 3G.
