Google+ hits 10 Million Users, Will it Continue to grow?

Google CEO Larry Page has confirmed earlier estimations that Google’s new Social Networking venture had reached 10 million users. Google+ Launched at the end of June, allowing only a handful of users into the service and then allowing them invite others to the service. Google also turned invites on and off as they pleased in the last few weeks[It's quite annoying]. They also blocked under 18 year olds from using the service. I’m still waiting for their explanation for that.

Beyond user numbers, Larry Page said the service has received a ton of activity with more than 1billion items shared each day largely due to the +1 button, which Page said is being used around the web about 2.3billion times a day.

The question is: Will Google+ continue to grow? Many social media analysts have likened Google+’s initial growth to Quora’s growth last year. It’s being filled by a bunch of technology people who can use any interface and who also invite their other tech friends to the service. So far, I’ve got only 4 friends who use Google+. 1 is a Graphic Designer, the other is studying Chemical Engineering, 1 is studying Computer Science and the last friend can’t figure out how to add people to the service. Oh and I’ve not been able to use it yet, No Under  18s allowed.

There’s a name for this kind of growth. It’s being called ‘The Scoble Effect’. I’ll explain this. Rackspace[the hosting company] employee Robert Scoble has been known to study startups and over the years has gained so much influence that any service he tries and loves, gets a ton of users. We’ve seen it time and time again with Quora and recently Instagram and Color.

For other sites that have gone mainstream without ‘The Scoble Effect’ like Twitter, it’s because they were used early by celebrities like Oprah and Ashton Kutcher and people tried it and loved it. According to the list of the top followed people on Google+, everybody there is in tech. From Mark Zuckerberg, to Larry Page and Mashable.

With time, we might see Google+ dip and reduce in its amount of daily submissions[most of which are still about Google+ anyways] and number of users. What do you think? Leave us a comment!
