Twitter now gets 200 Million tweets daily

It’s exactly half of the year. Twitter users are now sending 200 million tweets per day according to a blogpost by twitter. Looking at the number of tweets posted in January 2009, we had 2million tweets a day and by June in 2010, Tweeps were posting 65million tweets a day. In physical perspective, every day twitter users write an equivalent of a 10million page book via their tweets or 8,1630 of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Now, to read this text will take more than 31 years so don’t even attempt it! Stacking all these War and Peace copies together, and the books will reach 1,470 feet about the size of Taiwan’s Taipei 101 – the world’s second tallest building.

Tweets stack up to reach Taipei building

We’ve continued to see Twitter grow from it’s early text post only stage to it’s photosharing stage and it’s being used as a news distribution tool by a lot of people now. People are beginning to check the Trending Topics to find out what’s going on around the world(planking is not news). The question remains does twitter pose a threat to facebook? Sure they’re not the same service but there’s been an increase in Microblogging recently to the point that tumblr has more users than wordpress.

Twitter has also released the top Trending Topics for the first half of the year, divided into the 2 most popular categories.
