Happy 5th Birthday Twitter!
Five years ago to the day, the first full version of Twitter was introduced to the public. To mark the occasion, the company has released some interesting facts to show how much they have grown in 5 years. “Currently, about 600,000 people sign up for a Twitter account every day, but it took Twitter almost a year-and-a-half to attract its first 600,000 members’, the company said in its official Twitter feed.
In its first day, 224 tweets were sent by users which is the amount that is sent every one tenth of a second nowadays. According to the company’s engineering team users send 350 billion tweets everyday. ”Delivering 350 billion Tweets a day is a terribly fun engineering challenge. But, it doesn’t capture how passionate our users are,” the post by Twitter’s Engineering team says.
The company also announced this week that it now has more than one million registered apps, compare to just 150,000 it had last year. That is an app created every 1.5 seconds. Also there were 600,000 sign ups to twitter just yesterday alone whereas it took 16 months for twitter to have 600,000 accounts to be created.
Twitter is now rumored to be worth about $7 billion, although it has not gone public yet and does not seem to be planning to in the near future. Personally I believe, that although Google+ has been created, (which is meant to rival Twitter) Twitter would still be around and running for a long while.
So whether we use it to talk about the latest movies in cinema, find out the score of sport matches or just use it to gossip, most of us cannot do without Twitter. So from us at Technesstivity, Happy Birthday Twitter.
