The music video for “Gentleman”, Psy’s new single has hit over 70 million views within its first two days. The video stars Psy being silly as usual and all the wonderful colours of K-Pop. Only this time, he’s playing pranks on women around what we’d like to assume is Gangnam. Definitely not a gentleman.

So here’s Gentleman from Psy. Do you think this can hit the 1.5 billion views Gangnam Style got? Leave us a comment.

2go-iROKING

Nigerian music streaming service iROKING, has partnered with another social network 2go and launched yet another music site for the social network’s users. This is the second time iROKING is launching a mobile music website for users of a social network – it launched one for Eskimi users in December 2012.

The mobile site, iroking.2go.im was developed by iROKING and brings the latest tracks to 2go users – allowing them download songs from their favorite Nigerian artistes for free. Keeping up with 2go’s low-cost approach, the website is light so pages can load faster. The music files have also been compressed so that data charges are at a minimum.

In addition to free downloads, 2go’s users will now have news updates on the music industry via the website.

2go.2goMainMenu

With more than 9 million users in Nigeria, 2go is one of Africa’s largest mobile social networks. The service allows its users make new friends and message each other. Its applications run on a wide range of phones giving users with the cheapest phones access to a fast chat service. In addition to making friends via chat rooms, users can chat with their Facebook and GTalk friends within the applicatin.

For iROKING, this is a great deal – we’re not sure what the revenue sharing details are but iROKING gets to push its brand further and make it more popular. With the music site on Eskimi and 2go, iROKING will get to people who can’t afford to stream music constantly.

For people who don’t already use 2go, free music is a good enough reason to signup. 2go is definitely trying to get its users to be more active on the site. It’s a win-win deal for both companies.

iROKING is owned by iROKO Partners, the company that also owns movie streaming service iROKOtv. iROKING’s music catalog has over 35,000 tracks from over 400 artists. The company also manages the YouTube channels of over 80 artists, raking in 15 million views on average, monthly with over 130 million pageviews.

What do you think about iROKING launching specific music sites for social networks? Hit or miss? Please leave us a comment.

Eskimi-Iroking-Music-2

Nigerian music streaming and download service iROKING, has teamed up with mobile social network Eskimi to launch a mobile specific website exclusive to Eskimi users. The mobile site allows users stream music seamlessly as well as download their favorite tracks for free.

Eskimi-Iroking-Music-3

The website still retains Eskimi’s key feature – allowing users chat with their friends via notifications in the header. It can be accessed via music.eskimi.com and content access requires an Eskimi login.

This is a good move for both websites as iROKING can get its over 35,000 tracks to more people and Eskimi’s users don’t have to leave the site to get music. iROKING, since its launch last year, has gained over 100,000 users and launched its dedicated mobile site in October this year. Eskimi on the other hand has over 10 million users and is the second most visited destination for Opera Mini users in Nigeria.

What do you think about this new feature on Eskimi? Does it remind you of Facebook nation?

October 10th was a big day for Gidilounge as it unveiled to the public, big updates of some of its services.

The Company’s CEO, Olumide Adewumi started off the event with the presentation of the company’s redesigned website followed by the all new gPlayer 2.0.

The new site features an all new design and layout, the site automatically resizes to fit you browser window allowing it to still look and work good on mobile devices and it implements a technology called ‘cloud form integration’ which is a feature that allows the site to be rendered to users depending on their location and this will reduce lagging.

The gPlayer which is the new name given to the former ‘Gidilounge music player’ features a total overhaul of the player. With its new clean design the player has all of the basic features other music players like iTunes have which are for example; Play, pause, shuffle, playlist etc. According to the CEO, the former music player took 1.2seconds to load compared to gPlayer which takes 821miliseconds to load.

The new player also has a feature called lounges where users can listen to specific collections of music suiting their mood like the Azonto lounge which lets users listen to all sorts of Azonto music and Study flow for users who want to listen to music while they study. This feature works with a complex algorithm, which acts much like what is behind the shuffle feature that randomizes the songs so that each time you visit the lounge, your experience will be different.

The new Player will be very portable and will be able to be embedded on any site which also makes it mobile compatible.

Gidilounge says that it will give verified content creators (artistes and DJs) verified accounts for free to be able to manage their content themselves.

Nigerian local video content creator and publisher BattaBox has filed a copyright complaint to YouTube against a controversial video of Lagos by American rapper Rick Ross. Hold Me Back(Nigeria) tells the story of the slums and hustle in Lagos and has received criticisms from a large section of Nigerians.

BattaBox as a YouTube advertising partner has certain privileges over copyright claims. In 2 tweets to me, BattaBox says part of its content was used in Rick Ross’ video.

Maybach Music has however taken down the original video it put up and replaced it with an alternate version.

BattaBox was founded by ex-CNN reporter Christian Purefoy and was launched during the Occupy Nigeria protests in January this year. Since then, the service has continued to see growth as some of its own videos(How Many Boyfriends can a Naija girl have) have gone viral.

A few weeks ago, YouTube took down the video of “Toyin”by upcoming group DRBLasGidi after a copyright claim by DJ and Producer DJCaise. Members of DRB then came out to state that the copyright claim was false.

YouTube takes copyrights very seriously and takes videos down sometimes without enough claim because YouTube tries as much as possible to avoid lawsuits.

The question however is what a person can claim copyright of. Iroko Partners took a couple of covers of Nigerian songs last year simply because Iroko had licenses to the music videos and/or the songs.

iROKO Partners’ music streaming and download service iROKING, has launched a mobile website specifically for its mobile audience and redesigned its desktop website.

The Mobile Site

The site can be reached at m.iroking.com. Users will also be redirected to the mobile site as soon as they enter iroking.com in their mobile browser.

iROKING’s mobile site does not support streaming however and only allows users download low or high quality of tracks for free. If you’ve already signed up to iROKING, all you have to do is login. New users have to signup via their email address or Facebook.

The website is built with mostly text so users can navigate and load pages quickly. You can also search for your favorite Nigerian songs by Genre or the search bar as well as view the top 10 songs, new releases and featured artists.

Redesigned Desktop Website

iROKING’s desktop design has switched themes and colours from a dark shade of blue to a lighter shade of blue.

The homepage hasn’t changed much – allowing you search for music or browse displayed artists. iROKING has gone social with playlists   – showcasing community curated playlists and displaying them on the homepage as well.

Another significant change is the movement of the play bar from the bottom to the top. There are also new features in the sidebar including a link to music videos and dedicated radio channels to hip-hop, jazz and other music genres.

iROKING was launched on January 1st this year and currently has over 100,000 users and 200 artists on its platform. Releasing its Android and iOS apps within the year.

Here are screenshots of iROKING’s mobile site and redesigned desktop site.
