iPhone 4S: First impression And Full Specs

4S
Apple yesterday unveiled the iPhone 4S,which is the successor to the iPhone 4. In terms of design and shape its nothing different from its junior brother, on the hardware side, the new beast has:

Camera: 8 Megapixels with Flash, improved light sensitivity and ability to capture Full HD Video (1080p)

Processor: A5 (Dual Core) which is 2 times faster than the iPhone 4 in terms of performance

Storage: 16GB – 64GB

Cellular: CDMA / GSM

RAM: unconfirmed either 512MB or 1GB

It has HSDPA+ capabilities which most carriers call “4G” and offers theoretical download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. In terms of software, the iPhone 4S will be running iOS 5 which will be available from the 12th of October for  iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 2nd and 3rd gen with new apps like Cards an app allows you send physical greeting cards to friends and family, Find My Friends an app that shows the location of your friends on a map using location services on their iOS device and the most important is Siri a virtual personal assistant with the ability to detect languages such as English, French and German and also perform various tasks for you on the iPhone. It’s important to note that Siri will only be available for the iPhone 4S so you shouldn’t get your hopes too high.

Another iOS 5 feature is the iCloud feature which allows you save your files in the cloud (Apple’s servers) and sync it wirelessly across all your devices, including your Mac. It also allows you match songs from the iTunes store and upload the ones that can’t be matched. Other features are iMessage (think BBM for iPhone), Reminders, Instant Photo Editing, New multitasking gestures, Notifications Centre, etc.

The iPhone 4S will available for purchase on 14th of this month for people in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Japan and by the 28th in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

If you’re a current iPhone 4 user, don’t be in a hurry to upgrade, apart from the upgraded processor and camera the only new feature here is the Siri application which might still be brought to the iPhone 4 possibly via Jailbreaking. I believe more features can be added here, such as NFC (Near Field Communication) which is used for mobile payments and currently on the new Blackberry smartphones, 4G LTE which will soon start rolling out starting 2012 and better re-design.
