It was meant to be a simple Halloween prank. Everyone laughed about it. Except the Black Guy.

Don’t ever scare a black guy. Seriously.

My video app is better than yours. In the ever growing battle for user time(and bandwith), Vine, Vimeo, Instagram, YouTube and Keek have even more competition. MixBit – launched by YouTube Co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen is the new kid around the corner.

MixBit is an iPhone app that lets users record, edit, share and mix videos from other users into a video of your own. It was created by Hurley and Chen’s company – Avos Systems.

To record a video in MixBit, all you have to do is tap and hold the screen until your video finishes recording.  In the continuing trend of Internet limits, the app lets you record only 16 seconds of video. You can also include only 256 clips in a video mix.

Thankfully, the app has no filters but allows you rearrange clips and save drafts. Currently, you can’t upload pre-recorded videos but the founders say the feature will be added soon.

Here’s my favourite part about MixBit – no numbers. Users have no idea how many times a video has been viewed or shared. There are also no profiles or followers. Chad Hurley says he’s turned off by self promotion on the Internet. You can however, watch any video you like within the app and share as you wish.

All videos uploaded to MixBit are in the public domain and any user can use any of the clips uploaded.

Download MixBit From The Apple App Store. An Android version is in the works.

The music video for “Gentleman”, Psy’s new single has hit over 70 million views within its first two days. The video stars Psy being silly as usual and all the wonderful colours of K-Pop. Only this time, he’s playing pranks on women around what we’d like to assume is Gangnam. Definitely not a gentleman.

So here’s Gentleman from Psy. Do you think this can hit the 1.5 billion views Gangnam Style got? Leave us a comment.

In just a month, we’ve spent 2,782 years worth of time watching videos of the ridiculously viral Harlem Shake that took over YouTube the past few weeks. In that time, we could have made $176 million in the US, earned 50,780 bachelor’s degrees and traveled the sun and back 2,312 times.

Those of us who would rather do something less ambitious with that time could have watched The Lord of The Rings extended edition trilogy, including credits, two million times. I haven’t even gotten to watching any!

The infographic below has more stats to make you feel like a weist and reevaluate the things you spend time on. To help you waste even more time, type in “do the Harlem Shake” on YouTube and watch the page literally do the Harlem Shake.

Nigeria Records Second Highest YouTube Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa In 2012 http://www.technesstivity.com/2013/03/nigeria-records-2nd-highest-youtube-growth-in-sub-saharan-africa-in-2012/ http://www.technesstivity.com/2013/03/nigeria-records-2nd-highest-youtube-growth-in-sub-saharan-africa-in-2012/#comments Sun, 03 Mar 2013 13:45:38 +0000 http://www.technesstivity.com/?p=11222

Despite broadband limitations and network interruptions, YouTube has warmed its way into the hearts of Nigerians.

In 2012, the number of YouTube views in Nigeria grew by 125 percent, making Nigeria the country with the second highest viewership growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The figures place Ghana in the top spot with a 140 percent growth. Nigeria is ahead of other Sub-Saharan African countries with local YouTube domains. Kenyan views grew by 95%, South African views by 80%, Uganda by 75% and Senegal by 75%.

YouTube has been a good avenue for Nigerian content creators to publish videos to the world and monetize them with its ad partnership program.

“Nigerians have embraced YouTube, creating and watching locally created and relevant content in the different local languages,” said Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade. ”They are part of a highly connected global community that uploads 72 hours of video every minute and watches 4 billion hours of video a month.”

Among all the videos uploaded from Nigeria to YouTube in 2012, a large number of them were entertainment related. Nigerian music artistes and Nollywood’s creators have finally embraced the service as another path to monetising content.

Google began launching localised versions of YouTube for Sub-Saharan countries in December 2012. The localised versions pushed local content to the YouTube homepage of users across Africa, encouraging subscriptions and uploads.

That decision seems to have paid off. What do you think?

Nigerian local video content creator and publisher BattaBox has filed a copyright complaint to YouTube against a controversial video of Lagos by American rapper Rick Ross. Hold Me Back(Nigeria) tells the story of the slums and hustle in Lagos and has received criticisms from a large section of Nigerians.

BattaBox as a YouTube advertising partner has certain privileges over copyright claims. In 2 tweets to me, BattaBox says part of its content was used in Rick Ross’ video.

Maybach Music has however taken down the original video it put up and replaced it with an alternate version.

BattaBox was founded by ex-CNN reporter Christian Purefoy and was launched during the Occupy Nigeria protests in January this year. Since then, the service has continued to see growth as some of its own videos(How Many Boyfriends can a Naija girl have) have gone viral.

A few weeks ago, YouTube took down the video of “Toyin”by upcoming group DRBLasGidi after a copyright claim by DJ and Producer DJCaise. Members of DRB then came out to state that the copyright claim was false.

YouTube takes copyrights very seriously and takes videos down sometimes without enough claim because YouTube tries as much as possible to avoid lawsuits.

The question however is what a person can claim copyright of. Iroko Partners took a couple of covers of Nigerian songs last year simply because Iroko had licenses to the music videos and/or the songs.

Google+ Is Google’s Secret Weapon Aimed At Horrible YouTube Comments http://www.technesstivity.com/2012/07/google-is-googles-secret-weapon-aimed-at-horrible-youtube-comments/ http://www.technesstivity.com/2012/07/google-is-googles-secret-weapon-aimed-at-horrible-youtube-comments/#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2012 09:11:14 +0000 http://www.technesstivity.com/?p=8426

YouTube, the Google owned video-sharing website where users can upload, share and view videos has a reputation for having really mean comments. In fact, according to John Herrman at Buzzfeed, they actually have the worst comments found on the Internet.
In his article he expressed that

“YouTube is a comment disaster on an unprecedented scale. All of the worst things that could be said have been said here. YouTube IS the room with the million monkeys and the million typewriters, but they haven’t even gotten half-way though Hamlet yet because they’re too busy pitching feces at one another.”

YouTube has noticed this and has taken it to the drawing board and come up with a solution, a ‘secret weapon’. They will connect users YouTube accounts with their Google+ accounts by sending them requests asking them to do so once they try to comment or upload a new video.

I noticed this when I tried to comment on a video and this popped up trying to persuade me into connecting my YouTube account to my Google+ account.

And if you say you don’t want to use your full name, Google keeps pressuring you, taking the “No means Yes” approach:

The idea is that now that users reveal their real identity they will be kinder and less sensitive with their comments but how effective will this really be?

I believe that people who already tend to be civil will be willing to link their real names to their YouTube accounts, but those nasty commenters will simply keep their masks on. Google encourages those making the switch to review the content they’ve previously posted, I predict that some careless users will accidentally link their real identities to their ugly YouTube ones, or rush through the process, thus revealing themselves to be the authors of some disturbing comments.

In my opinion this is really a good approach and a smart one too but will it really change things? We will have to give this sometime I guess. What do you think?

If you’re an avid YouTube visitor, you’ve probably noticed this a couple of times. The view count on new videos always stops at 301. Numberphile speaks to YouTube Analytics staff, Ted Hamilton. Turns out YouTube is coded that way so people don’t beat the system. Ted Hamilton also defines a “view”.
