Amazon Announces Kindle Fire HD Range

Amazon has announced a new lineup of its Kindle range of devices: the Kindle Fire HD. The Kindle Fire HD range includes the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch tablets. Both versions have been made thinner at 0.4 inches for the 7″ and 0.35″ for the 8.9″.

Kindle Fire HD 7″

The Kindle Fire HD 7″ is an upgrade to the original Kindle Fire. Retaining its 7-inch display, Amazon has added a 1280×800 HD display to this tablet, running it on a 1.2Ghz dual-core CPU and 16/32GB of internal storage.12.6/26.9GB available for user content depending on what option you choose. Amazon is also offering free cloud storage for all purchased content.

Connectivity on the Kindle Fire HD 7″ is available via a special dual-band, dual-antennaed wi-fi which allows this version of the Kindle Fire capture data faster than the Nexus 7 and the iPad 3.

Like all versions of the Kindle, content can be purchased via Amazon’s pre-installed apps. The new Kindle Fires also include the company’s special cloud-accelerated silk browser.

The price of the Kindle Fire HD 7″ is $199 and its battery life lasts 11 hours of continuous use. It will be available from September 17 this year.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9″

Amazon has moved into the large Tablet foray with the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″. The 8.9-inch variant of the Kindle Fire comes in two versions of Wi-Fi and 4G+Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi version starts $299, while the 4G version starts at $499. The company says this variant will be available from November 20.

The display stands at a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels and can play video up to 1080p HD. Wi-Fi is supported with the dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi radios like the 7″.The Wi-Fi version comes with 16GB or 32GB of storage while the 4G+Wi-Fi comes with 32GB or 64GB of storage. Cloud Storage is free for all content purchased via Amazon’s services.

Both variants of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ are powered by a Dual-core, 1.5GHz OMAP 4470 CPU which has 40% more memory bandwidth than a Tegra 3 CPU, enabling faster web browser JavaScript performance. Web browsing is also performed via Amazon’s Silk browser.

All buyers of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ get access to a one month free-trial of Amazon Prime which offers unlimited streaming of hit movies and TV episodes, reading a Kindle book a month for free, and Free Two-Day Shipping on ordered items.

Conclusion

Amazon has taken the tablet war it started last year to a nuclear level. We’ll be watching the sales of the new Kindle Fire generation against that of Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad. The original Kindle Fire is now priced at $159.
