Amazon has finally announced its smartphone and dubbed it “Fire Phone”. The phone comes after years of countless rumors. We’ll go right into the specs.
Fire Phone sports a 4.7-inch HD LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It’s 8.9mm slim and weighs 160 grams.
On the inside the Fire Phone gains power from a 2.2GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage is at 32GB or 64GB. The Fire Phone runs Amazon’s Android-forked Fire OS 3.5.0.
For cameras, the Fire Phone has 4 front-facing infrared camera to figure out where your face is as you use it. These cameras help fix the orientation of the screen and make it three-dimensional. Its cameras for taking pictures are a rear-facing 13 megapixel camera with multi-frame HDR, auto focus, optical image stabilization, f/2.0 5-element wide aperture lens, LED flash and a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera for selfies. Both cameras can record videos up to 1080p HD at 30 fps.
Connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC. It can connect to cellular networks that provide up to HSPA+ and supports 9 different LTE bands. For sensors the phone has a Dynamic Perspective sensor system with invisible infrared illumination, gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, barometer, proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor.
Amazon has pre-installed a lot of custom apps that work with the hardware. Mayday is a customer service app that lets you contact Amazon and have an Amazon staffer guide you through your issues and solve them. Even more impressive is Firefly(with its own custom button). Firefly uses your phones camera to capture information you see and gives you options on what actions to take. Firefly uses Amazon’s catalog of movies, music and books to identify text and images from books or movies.
The Fire Phone is available for pre-order between $199 and $749 and is only available on contract from AT&T. Shipping starts July 25. All users get 1 year free of Amazon Prime and free cloud storage of Amazon content and photos taken with the Fire Phone.
