E3 2012 To Feature PlayStation 4 and Xbox720

I know a lot of people would cringe at the sight of the name, “Xbox720″, but you needn’t worry because there is no confirmation that the next Xbox will be called that. It is in the title merely for attention grabbing purposes. The UK gaming site, MCV, have reported that, without a doubt, there will be a revelation concerning the next Xbox AND the next PlayStation at E3 2012.

However, there is reason to doubt the validity of this news. Sony stated that the PS3 will have a ten year lifecycle, so it wouldn’t make sense to be revealing another console while the PS3 is still being kept relevant with games and firmware that are constantly pushing its limits. On the other hand, the revelation may be small, and made mainly in an effort to remain in the race with Microsoft, who are in a better position to announce a new console.

If Sony and Microsoft do end up revealing key details about their next consoles at E3 2012, it would coincide with the announcement of the release schedule and pricing details of Nintendo’s Wii U. It could turn in to a showdown between all three gaming giants which would make for a grand E3 so stay tuned.

On the credibility of the report, MCV’s online editor, Ben Parfitt, said on Twitter, “Obviously we can’t reveal our sources. But you have my personal word on this – the source is exemplary, 100% concrete, ultra high level.” I’m taking his word on this and so I’ve abstained from starting the title with “RUMOUR:…”. May E3 2012 be one to remember.

What features are you expecting from these next-gen consoles? Do you have any name suggestions for the next Xbox? Please leave any comments below.

Update: Sony Executive says there will be no PlayStation 4 revelation at E3 2012. So don’t trust MCV anymore!
