Google staff and inventor of Internet Relay Chat (The first Instant Messaging service on the internet), Jarkko Oikarinen announced on Thursday via his Google+ page, that phone calls can now be made within a Google+ account. Hangout is Google+’s multiple video chat feature.
This means Google+ users can bring non-Google+ users into conversations and hopefully lure them into using the service. Oikarinen said “We are constantly listening to feedback so that we can make Hangouts even better for Google+ users, and we’re excited by the really cool ways people are using the product,”.
The feature is currently free for United States and Canada residents. To add a call to a hangout, click “Invite” at the top of the Hangout’s Extras window, select the “Phone” tab on the left, enter the number and click “Call Now”.
