Don’t Be Evil: Google Launches Google Trader For Nigeria

In it’s now obvious bid to kill entrepreneurship and innovation in the Nigerian tech scene has now launched its classified service for Nigeria: Google Trader. Google Trader allows you post ads for free and place them in appropriate categories. This means Google is now in competition with local classified engines like Dealfish and the defunct Nairalist. Now, Google Trader is a Google service which means higher pageranks in Google search.

Why does Google have to Be In Every Business

We’ve seen a lot of Google panic in the last year. Foursquare launched, then we say Google Places. Later we say Google Hotspots as a competitor to Zagat. Google later bought Zagat earlier this year. Then Groupon launched and in the usual panic fashion we’ve seen Google Deals. Google even tried to buy Groupon for a reported $6 Billion.

Mark Zuckerberg recently called Google+ ‘Google’s little Facebook’. Let’s face it: Google+ is a Facebook clone. Oh I almost forgot Baraza: Google’s Question & Answer service for Africa. The service isn’t even limited to Africa. It’s open; anyone can access it from anywhere in the world. I noted that this was big competition for Nairaland.

There’s Business and There’s Greed

When Google announced its Get Nigerian Businesses Online service this year, I supported it. My point was Google is a business and will continually need funds to support whatever it needs to do. GNBO offers web hosting and email for Nigerian businesses at N1,500 for the first year. This beats everything anyone in the Nigerian space can offer. Looking back now, I kinda agree with what Mr. Loy Okezie said about Google killing of Nigerian businesses. Oh Google is also engaging in some hilarious petty things like removing a bloggers Google Ads because he doesn’t support GNBO. Oh come on! That’s quite childish isn’t it?

Google already has a lot of money. They need to chill out and let other people grow. I’m beginning to agree with Steve Jobs when he said “Don’t be evil is a load of crap”. I can see it clearly now.

What’s next?

Maybe Google will launch a job search service to kill Njorku and Jobberman. Then we’ll see Google create it’s own news service. Maybe even a tech blog.

What do you think?

Webdevs and programmers out there, what do you think about Google’s foray into everyone’s land? Neo-colonialism? Please leave us a comment.
