Surprising or not, a recent study from the NPD group revealed that the TouchPad, HP’s now defunct Tablet was the second best-selling tablet between the months of January to October. This could be attributed to the $99 fire sale HP had on the device after it they announced that it will seize production and support for WebOS devices. HP has since guaranteed continued support for WebOS, possibly because of the public reception of its heavily discounted tablets, so if you own one, you are still in good hands.

Of note in this report was that non Apple tablets moved over 1.2 million units over this period with Samsung taking the No. 3 spot. This number still pales in comparison to the industry leading, 11.1 million iPad units shipped in the last quarter alone. The NPD notes that many non-Apple tablet adopters never considered the iPad to begin with and as such, there is a growing demand for alternative tablets out there.

With the recent launch of the Kindle Fire and its record making pre-order count, one would have to wonder what the next study on tablet sales would be.  It’s rather unfortunate that the HP Touchpad’s No. 2 spot will only be shortlived. Are you in the market for a tablet and if so, are you considering something outside of the iPad? Leave us a comment.
