Toshiba Thrive

You have to agree that nearly all tablets in the market look alike. They all look pretty much like the iPad with their dark borders, glossy displays and shades of black or gray. But, Toshiba’s new tablet: ‘Thrive’ takes a different approach in tablet appearance and feel.

Carrie Cowan of Toshiba’s digital division says “Some of the early players are smartphone guys, so their thinking was, the tablet is a bigger screen”. “But we’re laptop guys”. So Toshiba’s aim is to pack all the benefits of a laptop inside a tablet[what I've been waiting for!] So the device is quite accessible and also crammed with a lot of ports.

The device comes at a weight of 1.6 pounds and a 10.1 inch screen. It also has 1 USB Slot, a mini-USB port and 1 HDMI output slot. The Thrive runs on Android Honeycomb 3.1 and is equipped with 2 cameras, a 2 Mega Pixel front-facing camera and a 5 Mega pixel rear-facing camera. It also has a replacable battery so when one runs out, you can switch to the other.

The Toshiba team added a few apps to the Android OS with an ‘App Place’ separate from the Android Market and a ‘Book Place’ for e-book purchasing and reading. They also added QuickOffice, a mobile-productivity app and a media-center app for music, videos and photos.

The device will be available for pre-order from June 13. It hits shelves in mid-July and comes in different hard-drive models: 8GB($429.99), 16GB ($479.99) and 32GB($579.99). To order one go to ToshibaDirect.com
