Huawei and Microsoft have launched a customised version of Huawei’s Ascend W1 Windows Phone called the Huawei 4Afrika.

4Afrika is a series of low cost Windows Phones specifically targeted at the continent.

Huawei’s 4Afrika is 10 millimeter thin and has a 4-inch 480 x 800 resolution, WVGA display. It is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 4GB of internal storage and runs Windows Phone. Battery Life on the 4Afrika is 420 hours on standby because of Huawei’s special power-saving technology.

The smartphone has been pre-loaded with custom apps from African developers for Africa. One of Microsoft’s aims with this initiative is to bring cloud services and smart apps to small business owners and African youths. The other is to get consumers to begin using its products – like SkyDrive and the new Outlook.

The phone, Huawei 4Afrika will be available in Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa by the end of this month

Apart from low-cost smartphones, the 4Afrika programme includes other initiatives like AppFactory in South Africa and Egypt and a female empowerment portal for North Africa.
