Afrinolly Hits 1 Million Downloads In 11 Months

Launched on September 7th 2011, Afrinolly has hit a million downloads in less than a year. In a Facebook post by Afrinolly, the app crossed this milestone 3 weeks ago as downloads across all platforms namely Android, Blackberry, Nokia Symbian, Nokia S40 and Java crossed the 1 million mark.

Afrinolly is a Nigerian movie rating, trailer viewing and music video watching app. Afrinolly says its Nigerian users make up 65% of downloads while Ghana, South-Africa and other African countries follow. The USA, UK, Brazil and India make up majority of the rest.

Shortly after launch, the app teamed up with MTN and was renamed MTN Afrinolly. MTN supported the app by adding it to its campaigns. You’ll also notice that the MTN logo is conspicously present within the app as its theme is largely MTN’s brand colour -Yellow.

Afrinolly is currently facing a lawsuit from iROKOtv. iROKO accuses Afrinolly of streaming content that has been exclusively licensed to it.

On the upside, Afrinolly’s milestone shows that there is hunger among Nigerian mobile consumers for local content and Afrinolly was developed just in time.
