Microsoft Announces Windows 8 Pro Upgrade At $39.99

Following Apple’s lead on Mac OSX upgrades, Microsoft has announced an upgrade plan for Windows 8. An upgrade to Windows 8 Pro will cost $39.99, be available in 131 countries and you can upgrade via your current Windows XP, Vista or 7 PC. Upgrades can be purchased via Windows.com with a step-by-step guide to help you with download and install.

The Windows 8 Upgrade assistant will also inform you of application or device compatibility issues and ask what services you want to keep with your current Windows. If you’re upgrading from Windows 7, you’ll be able to upgrade with all your files, settings and apps intact. Windows Vista users however will only be able to bring along their settings and files. For Windows XP users, only your files can move with you to Windows 8 Pro.

For those of us with awful internet services, the Windows 8 Pro DVD will be available for $69.99. This promo runs till January 31st 2013. Microsoft says it just wanted to share information about prices as Windows 8 moves towards a RunTime release.

Microsoft is very smart for following the Apple model of OS upgrades. It’s 2012 and I don’t think I want to walk into a store just to buy a DVD so I can head back home and then upgrade my Windows.

Will you upgrade to Windows 8?
