GMail SMS Now Open To Nigeria, Kenya And Ghana: How To Setup In 5 Steps

Google has announced via its Google Africa Blog that it has opened GMail SMS to Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana on all mobile telecom operators. GMail SMS works on all phones regardless of whether or not you have an internet connection.

After setting up your mobile phone via GMail SMS, GMail automatically forwards your emails as SMS text messages to your phone and allows you respond by replying directly to the SMS. You can also control the emails received by replying with commands such as MORE, PAUSE and RESUME. Composing a new email as an SMS and sending it to any email address, will result in the recipient finding your message in the right email conversation thread.

Receiving SMSes will cost you nothing as standard rates apply when you reply, create or send GMail SMS commands.

Here’s How To Setup GMail SMS On Your Phone

1. In your GMail account, click on your profile photo or account name at the top right of the page and and click Account

2.Click Open SMS settings in the “Phone and SMS” section.

3. Add your phone number to receive Gmail to that number.

4. Verify your phone number by entering the verification code that Google sent as SMS to your phone.

5. Check the box for email forwarding to your phone.

After these steps, you should get your emails  in your SMS box at the instant they’re sent. Step 4 is however worth noting. If you have a public Google+ profile, anyone can search your phone number and find you. Google+ is definitely inching towards an identity management network.

Have you tried GMail SMS? What do you think?
