NCC Denies BlackBerry Internet Service Shutdown Rumors[REPORT]

Yesterday, we posted a report stating that the Nigerian Government was planning to shutdown BlackBerry Services across the country to slow down the organisation of Pro-Subsidy protests. The NCC has denied this report and says it has not directed any telecommunications company to shutdown BlackBerry Services.

In a statement made available to Techloy, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo said

“The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been drawn to an information making rounds that the NCC had at a meeting this morning agreed with CEOs of telecommunications networks to shutdown Blackberry Services in order to deny Nigerians the use of that very important social network.

The management hereby states categorically, that there was never such a meeting held, nor was there ever a resolution to shutdown Blackberry services. The public is pleased advised to disregard such information.”

While we’re awaiting confirmation from other network providers, MTN said via its official Twitter account:

We wish to reassure ALL our subscribers, especially those in Lagos that Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) has not been shut down.

In addition, we have not received any directive from any quarter to shut down our Blackberry Internet Service.

Remember guys if you’re tweeting reports about the protests and other on-going events, the key is to tweet the truth and check before you tweet. Stay Safe. Incase anything happens, here’s how to tweet via SMS.
