RIM Announces BBM 6

In a post yesterday, we mentioned that RIM had something big to announce today and now, we know what it is.
in a blog post this morning, RIM announced the release of the latest iteration of its Blackberry Messanger (BBM) client called BBM 6.

I have long said that the only reason that people still use Blackberries is simply because of the fact that a lot of their friends use Blackberries and thus, they have a free(ish) messaging client with BBM. In recent years however, the advent of applications such as WhatsApp and LiveProfile, as well as the recently announced and upcoming iMessages from Apple seem to be encroaching on RIM’s formerly near-monopolistic share in the mobile messaging market. It seems that RIM has seen this as well and decided to up their game in the newest release of their BBM client, known as BBM 6, as well as something known as BBM connected apps.

BBM connected apps are applications which ” leverage the power of BBM 6 to incorporate your favorite aspects of BBM – and a few new ones”

Some of these new features include:

-More BBM Status Updates via BBM connected Apps

-Share BlackBerry app experiences with your friends via BBM 6

-Start a BBM chat from within a BBM connected app

-Discover BlackBerry apps through friends via BBM 6

For further details on these new features, you can see the blog post here.
So, what do you think? Is this the first step in RIM’s return to dominance or a desperate attempt from an ailing company to slow their inevitable demise? Leave a comment and let us know.
