Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales tweeted earlier today that Wikipedia will protest the US Stop Online Piracy Act about to be passed by going dark. On Wednesday January 18, Wikipedia visitors will be greeted with a message explaining SOPA and its protest against the bill.

Wikipedia joins a host of websites going dark on Wednesday. The list includes Reddit, Minecraft, XDA-developers, Tucows and all Cheezburger sites. Check out the list on Reddit. Other websites like Scribd have taken a host of documents off its site while website owners have gone anti-GoDaddy and are moving their websites to other hosting platforms.

Wikipedia’s blackout will be only on the English page of the site[since SOPA is an American act]. Jimmy Wales noted that the German version will host a banner on the 18th. The White House has also stated in a blog post that they will not “support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.””

You might want to finish up your assignments before Wednesday :)
