Despite broadband limitations and network interruptions, YouTube has warmed its way into the hearts of Nigerians.

In 2012, the number of YouTube views in Nigeria grew by 125 percent, making Nigeria the country with the second highest viewership growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The figures place Ghana in the top spot with a 140 percent growth. Nigeria is ahead of other Sub-Saharan African countries with local YouTube domains. Kenyan views grew by 95%, South African views by 80%, Uganda by 75% and Senegal by 75%.

YouTube has been a good avenue for Nigerian content creators to publish videos to the world and monetize them with its ad partnership program.

“Nigerians have embraced YouTube, creating and watching locally created and relevant content in the different local languages,” said Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade. ”They are part of a highly connected global community that uploads 72 hours of video every minute and watches 4 billion hours of video a month.”

Among all the videos uploaded from Nigeria to YouTube in 2012, a large number of them were entertainment related. Nigerian music artistes and Nollywood’s creators have finally embraced the service as another path to monetising content.

Google began launching localised versions of YouTube for Sub-Saharan countries in December 2012. The localised versions pushed local content to the YouTube homepage of users across Africa, encouraging subscriptions and uploads.

That decision seems to have paid off. What do you think?

A localised version of YouTube for Nigeria officially launched yesterday and they’ve released an ad presenting the service to Nigerians. The video stars rapper Jesse Jags appearing in a kid’s dream. The kid slept off while researching an assignment on “Deconstructing the existential perspective and evolution of contemporary Nigerian Politics, Culture and Entertainment”.

Jesse Jags makes a quick joke about how Nobody tests him[Get it?] and then explains how he heads to YouTube.com.ng to find inspiration. They both port into an advanced touchscreen-based world where different Nigerian videos from Tafawa Balewa speaking to Music videos and Oliver de Coque performances are highlighted. The kid’s sister then wakes him up and asks if he’s done with the assignment. He replies in the negative saying “I know where to find my inspiration”.

Here’s the Video

YouTube Naija LogoWe posted last month on Google’s plans to launch a localised version of YouTube for Nigeria. The site officially went live yesterday, and YouTube has partnered with Chocolate City, Storm 360, Nollywood Love, Channels TV and Lagos Television to bring local content to the site. The YouTube partner program has also been launched so content creators can develop videos and grow audiences while generating revenue.

Localised videos aren’t yet showing up on YouTube.ng or YouTube.com.ng as the URLs are being redirected to http://www.youtube.com/?gl=NG&hl=en-GB. By the end of the launch event yesterday and as I draft this, localised content haven’t still been pushed to the homepage. All I see are a bunch of tech related videos from RIM, Mythbusters to Nokia.

Nigeria joins the growing Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Tunisia on the list of African countries with localised YouTube versions. YouTube Naija will feature a new Logo with ‘Tube’ in the colours of the Nigerian flag. The design is consistent with YouTube’s new design. Making channels prominent and showing you shared videos from your Google+ and Facebook friends

We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.

Techloy reports that Google might launch a Nigerian version of YouTube in December. Nigeria will join Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Tunisa as African countries with specific Youtube versions. The service will be officially announced on December 7th and Google’s goal is to help Nigerians share and find local content via YouTube.com.ng or Youtube.ng .

The domain YouTube.com.ng was purchased in 2009 and YouTube.ng was purchased in February this year for about $20,000. We aren’t sure what services will be provided, but like the Kenyan version it might have dedicated pages in local dialects. Google might have also partnered with local broadcasters and content creators to bring Nigerian content to the service.

Like YouTube.com, users will also be able to share local content. This will help local creators publish content to a specific audience instead of random uploads to the main YouTube service.

What do you think about this service? Leave us a comment.
