Google Honors Gregor Mendel With Doodle

Today’s Google Doodle honors Austrian scientist, monk and father of genetics, Gregor Mendel on his 189th birth anniversary. The doodle is made up of peas which Mendel used to experiment and come up with the Law of Segregation and the Law of Inheritance.

Mendel began experimenting with plant hybridization using the pea plants while at a monastery in Brunn.

After his experiment with peas, he used honeybees instead. Mendel didn’t publicise his work much, as people that lived around his time doubted his research. He was also occupied with the responsibilities of his monastery to be able to devote so much time into it.

Born on July 20, 1822 in Heinzendorf, Austria (now in the Czech Republic), he studied physics, mathematics and the anatomy and physiology of plants in Vienna. Mendel died at age 61 on January 6, 1884 from chronic nephritis. After his death, in the early 20th century, the importance of his work was realized and continues to play an important role in genetics and biology today.
