The New Nokia Oro: Covered With 18ct Gold, Same Old Symbian On The Inside.

Nokia Oro

I know first hand that Nigerians are (or should I say were) big consumers of Nokia and their devices, so when I saw this phone I was amazed, this would be a phone my mother would love to have her hands on. The new smartphone internally comes with a 3.5-inch screen, 720p video recording, an 8 megapixel camera and a pentaband radio, all built around your not-so-amazing-anymore Symbian OS.

Externally however, the phone is lined with 8 carat gold paint with the back cover is made from real leather and the price is set to be around $1,126 (N146,000 approx.) The phone is set to launch soon in select countries across Europe and Asia. There is no word yet if Nigeria would get a launch date, but we’ll be sure to get that to you as soon as we hear anything.

Nokia’s Gabriel Speratti, General Manager for its operations in Russia, explained that:

“We have a large number of users who are looking for products with a build quality and superior materials that attest to their success and social standing. In some areas, possession of such premium products is the passport to being taken seriously.”

Sounds like something the big people back home would love to get their hands on. This is the kind of thing they like. But since Nigerians are so BlackBerry obsessed now…I won’t get into that. The name ‘Oro’ means gold in Italian, that I like. What do you think? Would you roll out close to 150 grand for a phone like this? Do tell, I’d love to hear this.
