For Twitter users, in order for you to send any other user a Direct Message, they have to follow you. Twitter from today is beginning to allow certain verified accounts receive messages from people they dont follow. This is so that these accounts wont have to follow users who want to message them and then unfollow them afterwards.

Last year Mashable reported that Twitter was working on a Business Centre which would enable additional features for a limited number of accounts, one of them is the ability to receive DMs without following the user.

This makes some sense for users who have to communicate with their banks when they have issues with online payments or transactions, the process of mentioning, requesting a DM and then unfollowing is a lot of stress.
Twitter hasnt announced whether this option will be rolled out to all verified accounts but the system has begun working for Indian mobile operator Tata DOCOMO. They tweeted earlier today ”Now to DM us all you need to do is follow @tatadocomo. No need for us to follow you first. Tested and its working.”

“Contrary to news reports, Twitter has not changed the rules for how Direct Messages (DMs) work for Verified accounts,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an email.

“We do not have plans for making this capability more widely available at this time,” the Twitter rep said. “We will continue to experiment with ways of helping people and companies get more value from Twitter. As with all of our experiments, we are listening carefully to feedback on this feature and will use that feedback to continue innovating and iterating.”
