Galaxy-Note-10.1-4

I had Samsung’s 2014 edition of its Galaxy Note 10.1 for about two days this week. Here are a few thoughts after using it.

Too Large

Galaxy-Note-10.1-1

10.1-inches is a bit too wide for a device that’s mean to be mobile. It’s really light so your hands won’t feel it but typing is a bit stressful because you’ll have to move your fingers from one end of the device to the other. Constantly.

Handwriting Recognition!

When your wrists hurt after moving your fingers around so much, you can use the Note 10.1 2014′s stylus and write instead. Handwriting recognition works great.

Camera

The camera is a bit slow by a few milliseconds. The good part is you can take a selfie and a picture of what you’re seeing at the same time. Here are 2 pictures taken at the journalists training at cchub last weekend.

Galaxy-Note-10.1-6

Galaxy-Note-10.1-7

Way Too Many Features

Samsung boasts of its multi-window feature on this device. For me, it’s a lot of stress. There are also too many options that pop up when you don’t need them. Like the notepad and calendar that pops up when you turn of the display and turn it back on. You can also swipe down from the homescreen for another window. Its function I couldn’t figure out.

Galaxy-Note-10.1-3

If there’s one thing you have to get used to, it’s the number of gestures you can make from the home/middle button. When you hold it for a while, it shows you apps that are currently running so you can switch. When you tap it twice, S-Voice comes up.

On the left of each app you run is a small arrow icon. When tapped, it shows a list of shortcuts to other apps. I mean, when I want to go to other apps I can just go home or switch apps right?

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition reminds me a lot of a desktop working environment. There’s just so much chaos.

Polaroid has announced the Socialmatic at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. The camera gives users the ability to print instant photos and share them to social networks they wish.

The Socialmatic has a built-in Zero Ink printer that prints out a 2×3 inch full colour sticker photo in less than a minute – you don’t even need to shake the paper. Each Socialmatic also has a unique QR code – which users can scan and move to other devices or print out.

Polaroid Socialmatic

On the digital front, the Socialmatic runs Android behind a touchscreen interface. It features a 14 megapixel front camera and a 2 megapixel rear camera. For storage, there’s 4GB of internal memory and a Micro SD slot for additional storage.

There’s WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity so you can easily share photos to others. Polarioid’s Socialmatic will ship in the fall of this year at a price of $299 and is available in white or black.

Can Polaroid get its groove back?

Twitter updated their mobile apps for Android and iOS with a few new stuff. The layout got a complete makeover, but the most notable update has to be letting users share photos via direct messages.

Other features include adding users to favourites so you can get push notifications anytime they tweet. This could be done by turning notifications on from certain users, but they just made it a more prominent feature.

I’m not a fan of the abrupt design overhaul, it looks nice but it’s gonna take a lot of getting used to because they literally moved everything around. Everything includes composing a tweet: That’s at the bottom of the screen now.

How do you feel about the change? Also, please be good in your DMs

Google officially released Android 4.4 a.k.a KitKat a few weeks ago. Here are 10 important things you need to know about it.

1. “Ok Google”

voice-control

In Kit Kat, you don’t need to touch the screen to get things done. Just say “OK Google” from your home screen to launch Google Now. You can search the Internet, send texts or play songs.

2. Immersive Mode

immersive

Whether you’re reading a book, playing a game or watching a movie, they will take place in the new immersive mode. Immersive mode hides everything except what you want to see. To bring back your status bar and navigation buttons, swipe the edge of the screen.

3. Faster Multitasking

Android 4.4 optimizes memory and improves your touchscreen so that it responds faster and more accurately. Google built it so it can run perfectly on devices that have 512MB of RAM.

4. Contact Favorites and Search

dial-pad

The new phone app prioritizes your contacts based on people you talk to the most. It also lets you search for nearby places and businesses right from your contacts so you can call them.

5. Hangouts is your new Messaging app

messages

With the new Hangouts app, Google has placed all your SMS and MMS messages along with Instant messages from Hangouts. You can also send animated GIFs. Unlimited grumpy cat goodness!

6. Emoji Everywhere

Android KitKat comes built with the famous japanese characters right in your Google keyboard.

7. Cloud Print

print

You can now print photos, documents and web pages from your Android 4.4 device. All you have to do is connect your printer to Google Cloud Print and print straight from your phone. For HP ePrint printers and other printers with Apps, you’ll have no problems printing.

8. Open documents from anywhere

From QuickOffice, you can open and save files on Google Drive or other cloud storage services. It also has access to yoru recently used documents so you can send the file you just worked on.

9. New QuickOffice

pick-a-file

With the newly redesigned QuickOffice, you can create and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations from your Android KitKat device.

10. Nexus devices first

moto-g-lead

Wondering if you’ll get updated to Android 4.4? It ships on the new Nexus 5 and will be coming to Google-collaborated devices first. If you’ve got a Nexus device or Motorola’s Moto X or Moto G, you’ll get KitKat before everyone else.

Android 4.4 is not a complete redesign like iOS 7 is which is a bit disappointing for a lot of users. The most important aspect of the OS is that it can run on devices with low RAM. It would seem Google wants users of budget Android phones to get the best experience possible.

Now, have a break.

Move over Tecno. Motorola has announced the Moto G – a $179 smartphone with amazing specs and the lack of a contract. We’ll go straight to the specs.

moto-g-story-google-drive-mobile

At 4.5 inches, the Moto G’s HD display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 giving it 329 pixels per inch(more than the iPhone 5S). It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean(will be getting Android 4.4 soon)  and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 1GB of RAM. Internal storage options are 8GB and 16GB. There’s no memory card slot. Buyers of this device get 50GB free Google Drive storage for 2 years.

moto-g-story-hd-display-mobile

The Moto G boasts a 5 megapixel rear camera with LED Flash that takes pictures with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and 3.8 megapixels for pictures with an aspect ratio of 16:9(you can choose between them).  Slow motion video, burst mode, auto HDR, panorama and Tap to Focus are features of the rear camera. The front camera stands at 1.3 megapixel. Video capture on both cameras is up to 720p HD at 30fps. Video playback is at 30 fps.

Motorola Highlights features of the Moto G in this video.

moto-g-story-moto-migrate-mobile Connection options are WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a headset jack and  microUSB.  Internet speeds are up to 21 Mbps on HSPA+ networks.  Sorry, no 4G on this  device. For location, the Moto G uses GPS and  GLONASS.

Apart from this device running pure Android, Motorola has added  Motorola  Migrate – an app that lets you wirelessly transfer your  photos, videos, SIM  contacts and even your call and text history from  your old Android phone  to your new Moto G.

The Moto G’s 2070 mAh battery lasts 24 hours of mixed usage  according to  Motorola’s website. The smartphone comes in 7 different  colours and users  can buy flip and grip shells to protect the Moto G.

$179 is roughly N30,000. This price and spec sheet beats every Tecno phone we’ve seen this year. More importantly, you’ll be getting a phone made by Google and you’re sure of getting Android OS updates without hassles.

However, our friends at TechCabal have learnt that the Moto G will not be coming to Nigeria officially but will get to Ghana. We find this decision odd and we’re hoping our e-commerce friends will give us a good price when they eventually get it.

We’ll be looking at how this phone does in the Nigerian market. In the meantime, would you buy the Moto G at this price?

Here are both posts.

A large number of Nigerians have embraced Tecno’s range of Androidphones. Although this has also split Nigerian Android fans into the Samsung and Tecno camps. You’ll be the first to know when Tecno releases the specs of the Phantom A3

Tecno recently unveiled the new entry to its Phantom lineup – the Tecno Phantom A2. It joins its elder brothers, the Phantom A and Phantom A+ in Tecno’s Android range. Let’s go right down to the specifications.

The Phantom A2 runs Android 4.2 on a 1.2GHz Quad Core CPU with 1GB of RAM. Internal Memory stands at 4GB and you can expand this up to 32GB via a microSD card.

The smartphone, also dubbed the F8, retains the same form factor as the other phantom phones and has a 5.7-inch capacitive touch screen display, making it the largest Tecno phone yet. You might even call it a Phablet. The resolution of the F8′s display isn’t so impressive at 720 x 1280 pixels.

Tecno has ramped up the rear camera on the Phantom A2 to 13 megapixels. The rear camera  with LED flash is capable of taking pictures at a resolution of 4128×3096. It takes pictures at a resolution of 3264×2448 pixels.

The Phantom A2 is dual sim capable and can connect to data networks up to 3.75G. For power it has a 2630mAh battery that promises to last for 17.3 hours of talk time and 280 hours on standby. We’ve not been told how long it’ll last when it’s used for data.

Other connectivity options are WiFi with hotspot capabilities, bluetooth 3.0, GPS, a USB port and an earphone port. Sensors installed are a G-Sensor, proximity sensor and a light sensor.

The Phatom A2 is available in black and white colours and ecno provides an 8GB microSD card and a powerbank in the box.

Womp womp! After getting us all excited for the release of BBM for iPhone and Android this weekend, BlackBerry decided to push the release of its native apps for both platforms to a yet-to-be-announced date.

The Android app leaked on Friday and already got over 1.1 million users in the first 8 hours. Thus, because of this leak there are some apparent “issues” they are attempting to fix, so BlackBerry is pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and disabling the leak going around.

For now, they have released BBM for iOS in Malaysia, India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They intend to continue the roll-out country-by-country.

I’m going to assume they want to fix all the bugs they can before they roll BBM out to the masses. Have you or have you not gotten your hands on the app already? What do you think of this? Necessary or unnecessary?
